  1. Resolved Question: Did Shamu kill the trainer at Sea World? Or did he badly injure her? - I have heard both stories.. Whichever the case, it is incredibly sad for the woman. I also do not agree that a 4000lb (or whatever) killer whale should be kept in a tiny pool. How can you blame the whale?

People are making it sound as if the whale is a terrifying creature! They're not! they're beautiful, wonderful, amazing and intelligent creatures on this planet! And if you keep a massive dangerous animal like that in captivity its OBVIOUSLY going to do something like this, but that's in its nature to do something like that. Its a WILD animal for christ sake! If the whale WANTED to kill, he wouldn't have held the her down under the water and drowned her. The whale would have ripped and teared her to shreds if he wanted to kill her, but he didn't, why cant people understand that? I think its disgusting how they're keeping the whale at the moment, in that tiny enclosure. Ever heard of animal welfare seaworld?! The poor whale hasn't got any room to move and exercise...it's pissed off...i think seaworld need to release him out of there otherwise its only going to make matters worse! If the trainer (a great animal lover) was looking down from heaven right now, she would be absolutely disgusted with the condition of the way the whale is being kept now. i just cannot believe it. i mean, yes, the whale 'killed' someone, but no one knows for certain if it was the whales fault...and even if it was, would that matter?! Its a KILLER whale! A dangerous animal, the trainer knew and understood the risks of her job. Some say the whale was aggitated before coming onto the 'staging area' swimming round and round in circles. Of course hes going to be aggitated...he's in an enclosure, with no freedom at all. Stressed out by the sounds of loud music, bright lighting, loud audience, rides in the background making loud sounds. Its a terrifying thing for an animal to not know whats going on. I've been to Seaworld about 6 times now, i thought they do a fantastic job with conservation, and housing marine animals well...but, not anymore. it breaks my heart to see a Killer Whale in a tiny tank with no communication with its own species and no room to move and exercise. Please, let me know what you think about what i have said. Thank you. by the way, i know that it wasnt the 'real' Shamu that killed, it was just the bigger whale that they get out to splash the audience with. And also, i never said to release it back into the wild. I meant to say release it into a bigger enclosure which replicates its natural habitat with good enrichment for the well being of the animal.

    I was at SeaWorld San Diego on the 20th Feb 08 and attended the Shamu Killer Whale "Believe" show. During this show, Shamu lived up to his Killer Whale name. During the show a Pelican landed on the water. This proved to be a big mistake for this unfortunate bird. To capture this video I guess I was in the right place at the right time...I wish I could say the same for the Pelican. Suddenly out of nowhere one of the whales lunged at it from underneath the water, caught it in it's jaws, and dragged the bird under the water, thus drowning it. The other whales in the pool, with the exception of the whale that was at the front of the pool with a girl from the audience, all disappeared under the water ignoring their trainers. You can clearly see the trainer in the forground use the intercom to tell the others to get the Pelican off the water or to distract the whales from going near it. Obviously this didn't work. As the whale gets the Pelican, you can see the trainer in the foreground put his hands to his head and yell at the trainers on the main stage. He then pushes the girl from the audience back away from the water and clear of any danger. At this point the show's music was still blaring out of the speakers, but it was obvious to the audience the show had not gone as planned. Some of the trainers tried to continue on as if nothing had happened and continued the dance moves. Meanwhile the whales still hadn't surfaced and had their catch at the bottom of the pool.
