Yahoo Answers - Resolved Questions

1. Resolved Question: Henrietta Lacks.....? - Is there a law against taking or making use of tissue (or other body parts) from a person when they are dead or still alive? Please answer in full depth. Thank you. Like doing tests on the tissue and like growing the cells. I am trying to write a persuasive essay on a book. The book is called The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. and if any of you have read this book. you will understand. So i was curious if it is still legal in a sense to take cells from people, like they took her cells.
2. Resolved Question: Henrietta lacks Case.? - Is there a law against taking or making use of tissue (or other body parts) from a person when they are dead or still alive? Please answer in full depth. Thank you. Like doing tests on the tissue and like growing the cells. I am trying to write a persuasive essay on a book. So i was curious if it is still legal in a sense to take cells from people, like they took her cells.
3. Resolved Question: How would you feel and what would you do (about Henrietta Lacks)? - I read about Henrietta Lacks and I am so torn between the side of her families and the scientist. I can't decide who is wrong and who is right. Would you say, that your mother's cell that was used for research without her consent should make the doctors pay the families cash for using them? It was their hard work that led to many discoveries ,but also their mother's cell that also led to discoveries. Are the families being overly concern about their mother's cells when they didn't even knew where her grave was? Did they just want money? Are the doctors undermining the families who need some money to keep the families together? (families can't afford medical insurance) and are the doctors benefit ting too much from their cells? I'll say that they are both wrong and right. Families should feel that way and doctors should feel that way. However, the families shouldn't accuse the doctors as thieves and the doctors shouldn't leave the families without any appreciations.
4. Resolved Question: Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks? - What are all the major themes in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks? I need to write an essay using one of these themes and I can't seem to figure out what the themes even are.
5. Resolved Question: Laws over ownership rights of dead relatives (Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks)? - We are having a debate in school on whether or not the Lacks family ( from the book The immortal life of Henrietta lacks) should receive financial rewards for Henrietta’s contributions to the scientific community and I am on the side saying the family should receive a financial reward. However, I first need to prove that the Lacks family has ownership rights over Henrietta's body after her death, so what laws from now or the 1900’s help me show that Henrietta’s body ownership rights belong to her family? You don’t have to read the book to be able to answer the question but if you also have evidence from the text that would be great… thanks!!!

5. Henrietta Lacks - American and European System Cannibalizing Black Genes -
www.citypaper.com On Feb. 1, 1951, Henrietta Lacks--mother of five, native of rural southern Virginia, resident of the Turner Station neighborhood in Dundalk--went to Johns Hopkins Hospital with a worrisome symptom: spotting on her underwear. She was quickly diagnosed with cervical cancer. Eight months later, despite surgery and radiation treatment, the Sparrows Point shipyard worker's wife died at age 31 as she lay in the hospital's segregated ward for blacks. Not all of Henrietta Lacks died that October morning, though. She unwittingly left behind a piece of herself that still lives today. While she was in Hopkins' care, researchers took a fragment of Lacks' tumor and sliced it into little cubes, which they bathed in nutrients and placed in an incubator. The cells, dubbed "HeLa" for Henrietta Lacks, multiplied as no other cells outside the human body had before, doubling their numbers daily. Their dogged growth spawned a breakthrough in cell research; never before could investigators reliably experiment on such cell cultures because they would weaken and die before meaningful results could be obtained. On the day of Henrietta's death, the head of Hopkins' tissue-culture research lab, Dr. George Gey, went before TV cameras, held up a tube of HeLa cells, and announced that a new age of medical research had begun--one that, someday, could produce a cure for cancer. When he discovered HeLa could survive even shipping via US mail, Gey sent his prize culture to colleagues ...
