    H&R Block's fiscal first-quarter loss widened slightly, as costs from a takeover more than offset other expense cuts and an unusual profit in business services. Biogen Idec said today it had offered to acquire Facet Biotech, a partner in developing multiple sclerosis and cancer drugs, in a deal valued at about $355 million. CIT Group said it has extended the contract of Chief Executive Jeffrey Peek for one year, even though his decisions to expand into risky businesses helped to push the lender to the brink of bankruptcy. Toshiba plans to bid for French nuclear group Areva's power transmission and distribution unit in a deal that could top $5 billion. Google announced that its China president, Kai-Fu Lee, is leaving the company to work on his own venture. Lee was the center of a legal fight when he left Microsoft in 2005 to join Google. The G20 will promise this weekend to keep economic support packages in place until recovery is certain and seek to reassure financial markets they have credible plans to withdraw the stimulus when appropriate.
