Yahoo Answers - Resolved Questions

  1. Resolved Question: Anyone heard of Asperger's Syndrome symptoms presenting as Alzheimers Disease in seniors? - Asperger's runs in my family. I have it, two of my brothers have it, two of my nephews and my father has it. My father is 70 and has never been diagnosed. He was refered by his neurologist to a neuropsychologist, but only after the neurologist said "you don't have alzheimers, its probably the combination of your medicines that you are taking." Still, the neurologist sent my dad to a neuropsychologist who ran a series of tests on my dad. I was in his office for the results of these tests and he told my dad that it was the early stages of alzheimers, but that he isn't making the diagnosis, the nuerologist is. The neuropsych told my mom and dad that compared to the "baseline", he is lacking in executive functioning, fine motor skills, and short term memory. I myself have difficulty with these very things, and my father explained that he has always been this way, with the exception of the short term memory issues. He learned everything by rote memory, he has always forgotten things midsentence, he had learning disibilities, and he has always been a rigid thinker. All of this is similar with me, even I lose my keys and purse a few days out of the week. I mentioned these things to the nueropsych and he said that he "questioned who diagnosed me and the others in my family." I told him four different psychologists, two in Idaho, and two at UW. My concern is that my father is anything but average to the "baseline" of 70 year old men with the same educational background. Anyone who knows my dad would agree. My father tried to explain this to the neuropsych and he disputed what my dad said. He doesn't believe in AS, so should my dad be first tested for AS at the University hospital and then worry about the possibility of Alzheimers? I just have this deep gut feeling about this. I lived with him for twenty years, and the nueropsych got too much wrong.
  2. Resolved Question: Do i have asperger's disease? - i had adhd since i was 7 or atleast when i found out about it. and sometime i can talk nonstop and annoy other people. and i get intrested easily. my brother said i could have asperger's disease but ihad adhd my whole life. and i get distracted alot pls help isnt he wrong i told i have adhd not asperger's!!
  3. Resolved Question: How do you teach sexual techiniques to someone with Asperger's Disease? - Their braIns are wired a bit differently. It is hard to keep this person focused. Anybody know of any books or people to ask?
  4. Resolved Question: How is a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome diagnosed in adults, is it a disease or a mental disorder?
  5. Resolved Question: How similar are the diseases Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD ? - And why dont people consider ADHD as an official disease?
  6. Resolved Question: I think my prof. has Asperger's disease? - I think my computer science professor may have Asperger's disease. She stop mid sentence, and start saying "uh" or "ok." She'll pace around the room saying "Uh" "Ok" and always has a strange smile and bewildered look on her face. If you tell her you're having a problem she'll take an exasperated breath, says "Oh boy" (like you just set a time bomb in her house) or say "hello?" like a cliche teenager with an attitude to their parents (like what you're asking is extremely obvious). There are about fifteen-twenty kids in our class, and maybe three understand whats going on, and the only reason they do is because they knew the programs earlier. When she wants someones attention she points in your face and says "you!" Also, she wears the same clothes EVERY week. No exaggeration, every week. Also she kinda smells, like she doesn't bathe. She seems to know the content semi-well, but cannot communicate it to the class. These are not criticisms, I'm not trying to make fun or be funny, this is what happens every week. Any ideas?
  7. Resolved Question: My boyfriend has asperger's disease. Help please? - I just recently found out that my boyfriend has asperger's. I don't really know that much about it, except he does have ALL the symptoms when I look it up. Can someone help me understand it better, and how to cope with it? It's rather confusing. He found out that he has had it all his life, and he's now 18. He just found out about it. How can I help him, along with myself understand it better?
  8. Resolved Question: School psychologist thinks my son has Asperger's Disease, I disagree? - My son is 11 now, in the 5th grade. The school psychologist, for some reason, thinks he has the Asperger's Disease. My son has always been somewhat timid and introverted, but has always had friends, and the descriptions of Asperger's that I read that describe the "one person birthday parties" do not describe him at all. In fact, he is quite well liked by his classmates and teachers, just a bit shy. He does not seem to "lack empathy"; in fact, I remember that during one birthday party when we were opening presents, he got a toy from our family friend which he already had, and he immediately ran to hide the original so they would not feel bad about getting him something he already had. Doesn't sound like a lack of theory of mind to me. My son is quite bright and inquisitive, and it seems that this combination of shyness and intelligence is all it takes today to be labeled as autistic. I mean, so what if he doesn't like gym class? I was clumsy and bookish at his age too. He doesn't have ANY of these "sensory issues" that I've been reading about either. He does like to make lists, and can be stubborn at times, but just doesn't sound like the dysfunctional profile of Asperger's that I've been reading about online. Could this just simply be his personality? I don't know of any impairment in conversation/social interaction that he has. He does not lecture people about his hobbies, and his hobbies/interests are not terribly unusual. If anything, he is embarassed to talk about them because he is afraid people will think they are "dumb." He is not interested in any one topic to the point of refusing to do anything beside the special interest. His performance in school is actually quite even across all subjects, unlike what I have read about Asperger children. He has no fine motor deficits, in fact his handwriting is so neat it looks like it's typed, and he does this with little effort. If I had to pick any disorder out of the DSM that sounds like it would fit him, it would probably be "Avoidant Personality Disorder." I felt much that way as a teenager, I worry he might become unreasonably self-conscious in adolescence. He is always so worried about what people think of him, he is very thin-skinned. I see nothing remotely like sensitivity to clothes tags in him at all.
  9. Resolved Question: Still dont have a girlfriend - 20 yo w/Asperger's Disease? - i am 20 yrs old i have asperbergers disease i am still a virgin i am so shy i cant talk to people i avoid all interaction with people bc i am afraid of them and socializing and always think theyre criticizing me and laffing at me behind my back.no frends, bc i am shy and can't approach people. i am so shy i can barely walk in public. all bc of my aspergers i read about it online i know i have it i can never talk to girls i freeze up i am so shy so ugly too. i just want frends and girlfriend and sex i dont have any of it bc i am so shy and aspergers. i am so jellis of fratboy types they all have sex when their like 11 and im gonna be the 40 year old virgin bc i have aspergers and i just know everybody thinks im a loser and shy and a wimp im too quiet and cant take initiative. sometimes im even too afraid to leave my dorm i shake when i have to talk to people even like someone at a counter at the deli. also im 5 foot 2 1/2 so short so ugly also 176 lbs im obese i look like a fat little dwarf. oh also i have so much acne it just never went away from pubberty. i have a huge schnoz bc i am jewish. asperbergers makes it so i get too anxious when i talk to anyone or even leave the house. oh btw i just wayed myself just now and now it says 178. one more thing i am selfdiagnosed with asperbergers i read about it yesterday online i know i hav it bc i am so shy and timid
  10. Resolved Question: What is the difference between disease du jour "Asperger's Syndrome" and being a painfully shy introvert? - Because browsing WrongPlanet.net gives one the impression that "Asperger's" is little more than a pathologization of personality traits that American/Western culture can't seem to fathom. It seems like a "diagnosis" of "Asperger" says more about society than the people "diagnosed" with it. When capitalism, with its pathological competitiveness, narcissism, and shallowness reigns supreme, the idea that one could be disinterested in the latest fashions (a question on the "Aspie Quiz"), cautious and not prone to senseless risk-taking ("stuck in routines", "compulsive planning"), have a modest view of oneself and be uncomfortable with self-promotion, be interested in intellectual topics ("obsessive special interest") and have a good vocabulary and a reading level beyond the 3rd grade ("excessive verbosity"), and generally have a sensitive, introverted temperament incompatible with aggressive, sociopathic Corporate America, one is deemed to be "autistic". It seems like many "Asperger people" are not really autistic in the traditional sense of the term. Most of the people at WrongPlanet seem like victims of society, a bunch of introverted twentysomething nerds for whom society doesn't work because they have shy, passive, intellectual personalities in an aggressive, competitive, narcissistic, extraverted, anti-intellectual world. Furthermore, most of these people it seems have relatively few problems in life compared to true autistics, with their only problem being the rather nonspecific "I can't get a girlfriend omg I'm still a virgin at 21!" If not being able to decipher women automatically renders one "autistic", I'd think most men would be "on the spectrum"! It's also worth noting that the recent explosion of "autism" is largely due to an enormous increase in diagnosis of Asperger's. It seems misleading at best, devious at worst that Asperger's is included in the "autism" statistics because whoever is making this decision KNOWS that people think 'retarded, rocking and screaming' when they hear "autism".

  9. ASPERGERS SYNDROME TEENAGERS: Trouble Making Friends -
www.AspergersSociety.org For a teenager with Aspergers Syndrome, as well as children with Aspergers, friends can sometimes seem like that impossible dream...a process that just doesn't make any sense. Because teens with Aspergers Syndrome have such difficulty reading social cures, these teenagers can't seem to pick up on the social slang that many teens use; they can't talk easily and casually like to many teens do. Because of this they are often shunned. Teenagers with Aspergers syndrome want friends but their Aspergers symptoms prevent them from figuring out how to get them. For a teenager with autism, this can be especially painful. Aspergers disorder or Aspergers disease, as some call it, can lead to depression, anxiety and worry for many children, teens and adults.
